Speed - fiend Wants Wheel Again

(From "N.Z. Truth's" Dunedln Rep.) When Walter Phillip Hailes swept round the/Southern Hotel corner m his Imperial 80 roadster, . at 0.55 a.m. on New Year's Day, 1927, he proved to at least one resident of Dunedin that a motor-car with one horn cantosssyou further than a bull with two horns can. UAILES was generally regarded at *V that time as the Major Seagrave of the south and when he appeared to answer charges of failing to stop after an accident and of failing to report an accident, his case was described by the police as a particularly bad one. His record at the time did not help him, it being stated that he had been convicted m December, 1926, for reckless driving at Oamaru, had been concerned m two accidents at Balclutha, and on another occasion had run over a bank and wrecked his car. Magistrate Bundle fined Hailes £10 and cancelled his driver's license for two years, and , when the penalty was announced Haile^s threw a faint m the court-room^ . These speed fiends have such volatile temperaments. In the same court last week, Hailes applied to Magistrate Bundle to have the cancellation of his license withdrawn, stating m extenuation, that he had been living m Waimate since his lapse of conduct, and that It was essential for him to have his license to earn his livelihood. He had been appointed canvasser for an insurance company and he had to tour the country districts extensively m following his occupation. ' '^ Senior -sergeant Quartermain, who opposed the application, put m a police report to the effect that all the police had on the applicant was that he was leaving Waimate without paying his debts. .•'■' , Hailes informed the court that he had arranged to liquidate his debts, most of which were due for hospital expenses. >, Since being convicted he had paid £880 m compensation to the man he had injured, and had lost a further £ 370 on his car. But Hailes will have to pay the full penalty for his folly as Magistrate Bundle declined to entertain his application.
