Whispers From Wanganui
(From "N.Z. Truth's" Wanganui Rep.), THE Wanganui Jockey Club has iri- * creased the value of the New Zealand Eclipse Stakes to £400 .besides making it a sweepstake of £10 each for starters. .! ■ v • • ■ -.•..-.. i ' * .. : The Eclipse Stakes is the first weight-for-age race of the season and it has always' drawn fields of good class. Sweepstake events are' becomiiigr popular with' owners of good horses, and the Wanganui Club,, appears to have made a wise move m (providing for a sweepstake for the Eclipse Stakes. '# ■■ . ,# • Avro was expected to run well on the first day at Trentham, but to be improved by that race. He will probably ibe m the money to-day or. Saturday. " , . • • • Otariri always showed a lot of ■ pace m his raoes, but was not good at the barrier. He appears to have settled down, and should win some good races* for F. A. Duncan. * • ■# ' Though Our Jack was not engaged at Trentham the first day, he will probably be a runner to-day or Saturday. . ' '■■■ '•'._•. # A. Jackson paid exes, on his trip to Hastings with the gelding, and hopes to do so at Trentham. #■.'■• ■ • The programme for the spring meeting of • the, Wanganui Jockey Club . is rauch on the same lines as last year, but the stake money has been increased all told toy £240. .* ♦ ♦ The Thespian filly, Curtain, will probably be a runner m the Maiden at Wanganui. She has wintered well, and should be m good order for the early spring meetings. "• • • When they first sprinted together last year, Curtain showed as much pace as Episode, tout she was repeatedly troubled by colds, and this prevented her being raced. -■• • * W. Rayner will bring Lysander m next month. The son of AbsurdPennon has had a good spell, and there is every reason to think he has benefited greatly by it.- --# « * With the ; exception of a slight cold, which she has now thrown off, Episode has done well since last seen out, and there is every prospect of the Limond fllly toeing m good order for the Wanganui Guineas, to be run on the 13th September;
