♦ — How Davey Lost His Half Century (From "N.Z. Truth's" Wellington Rep.) Sydney Davey conducted, a sideline to the daily task of removing the hirsute from stubborn chins. AT the back of his • shop m Cuba- ** Street,- Davey indulged the other side — that of a bookie — per medium of his telephone and the usual bookmaking paraphernalia.. The police apparently had their suspicions that all was not as it should be m Davey's little back parlor, for recently they- made a raid on the premises. ' ■.••.- Last week he pleaded -guilty m the Wellington Police Court before Magistrate Page, to usingn his premises for the purposes of bookniaking. . Davey was "booked" to the tune of £50, m default two months' imprisonment. 'He was allowed 14 days to find the money, Edwin Houghton, who conducts, a second-hand shop m Dixon Street, was also the subject of a raid by the police. Charged with the same offence as Davey, he pleaded guilty, but as he was only "doing business m a small way," Magistrate Page let him out with a fine 6f £20. .-•. ■ ; :: c;^-
