WHY WORRY ?

Some Naive Ideas For Gardeners (From "N.Z. Truth's" Auckland Rep.) The fact that your small garden is confined to a few yards of earth need not perturb you at all. If your neighbor has a pick, borrow it. And having borrowed it, select a portion of the public highway out- , side your house— and commence to • dig. ' ■ " ' ■■ "• ■■■■'■■ ■ r\ON'T worry about what your neigh- ** bors, the public, or; perhaps, the local authority might have to say about it, for you have the bright example set by Dr. F. J. Rayner, dentist and onetime cabareteur, etc.,. to guide your feet over the rough places. Let : us see what he did a few years ago when he purchased an area of land on either side of Almorah Road, Auckland. He built a miniature chalet and named it "Moose Lodge," and having done so it may be imagined that he sat down and pondered how the centre of Almorah Road could be employed to beautify his property. With a large shovelful of optimism and an equally ; generous measure of sweet impudence, he constructed a private driveway, enclosed it with a handsome stone wall, surmounted the end of the. drive by the erection of an elaborate archway, and then rested temporarily on his oars whilst he conceived further improvements. DOING IT PROPERLY But where , did the Auckland City Council come m? . . It didn't, and despite numberless protests oh the part of contiguous residents, the City Council continues to emulate a celebrated admiral with his telescope. Then followed . a handsome garage, another stone wall; with a kftchen garden, to boot, right m the middle of the road! \ ." However, a number of residents, infused with the final . shreds of their civic spirit, agitated to have the garage removed, a point which Rayner wisely conceded, and a board was erected at the- entrance to- the drive, stating that the road was a public thoroughfare. Perhaps the board offended the delicate sensibilities of someone living nearby, for Bhortly after the notice was erected someone found it smashed to matchwood, • and distributed along the roadway. . Neighbor H. E. Vaile attempted, a similar idea outside his property, and. was mortified to receive a demand that he should desist. The game; isn't fair. If Dentist Rayner has some original notions oh beautifying schemes, it doesn't seem at all fair that he should keep them all to, himself, and if readers, of this paper seek advice upon the question, or consider,, maybe, ' that there are yet a number of things which have not occurred! to this bright-mind-ed Aucklarider, "Truth" feels certain that he would willingly, nay, eagerly, reply to a post-card or two. Of : course,' you may have the City Council to dispute your claim to a few square feet of the roadway m front of your little home, but for the sake of what Rayjier has accomplished, we implore you* not to be dismayed,
