AT THE TOUCH

Regulated Shock Absorber Several ■, disadvantages m the various types of shock absorbers which have so far been introduced have been referred to m these columns previously, but a new type has now been introduced by an English concern. TT shows great promise, m that its damping effect is immediately variable at the will of the driver, to the load carried and the nature of the surface over which the car is passing. The new shock absorber, which will be known as the Villiers, depends for. its working on the amount of pil contained under pressure m the oil-tight casing accommodating the • rocking arm. The oil is fed to all four dampers by means of a pump fed from a reservoir. .A small arm situated just under the dash at the driver's hand controls the pressure m the casings, and therefore, the amount of damping effect can be controlled at a moment's notice. Another point which is much m favor of the new type of damper is that as the oil pressure is fed from a common source, the damping effect m all four units will be exactly the same. In the ordinary type of shock absorber this equality is not at all easy to obtain, which, to a large extent, accounts for the unsatisfactory working of some of them.
