ASHBURTON AFTERMATH

Warepa and Moneymore Score In Promising Style

(By "The Toff.") . SPECULATORS evidently went astray m their choice of Travis Axworthy for the Lyndhurst Trot at Ashburton. t

WITH F. G. Holmes m the sulky, he . was regarded .as a certainty, but When the race was all over he was fourth. Travis Axworthy began correctly and paced a good race, but failed to reach the money. The manner m which Bingen Patch made the pace for a mile rather impressed his followers that he would win, but after being first to show into the straight he died away. Awa-iti missed the jump-out, but was m fourth place when the race had been m progress two furlongs. He had a winning position at the bend for home, .but did not come on. But Our Bird and Royal Authoress, which had been' prominent all the way, shot put with Warepa after them. Royal Authoress was first to weaken, while Warepa stuck to Our Bird. Both drivers were busy over the last furlong, Ri Townley landing Warepa a winner from Our Bird. Then came Royal Authoress. iiiniiiiitiiiiiiiiiiiimiiiiiii , 'iiiimiiiiiniiiiiiiiiniiiiiiiiiiiimiiiiniiiii|niiiiininiiiiii

Of the bunch that followed the placefillers home, Heroic, Travis Axworthy and Mercury should ibe capable of some improvement. Favored by a run on the rails round! the home bend, Moneymore managed to win the Winchmore Trot Handicap by a head from the two-year-old filly, Wrackeen. Had the latter* begun quickly, she would have won— and won easily. Moira was quickest away and with Bingen Patch they carried on the running for a mile, where they both commenced to tire. - • Imperial Thorpe was prominent at the home bend, with Wrackeen making up her ground m grand style. But TMoneymore got through on the rails and Imperial Thorpe ran out wide. This settled his prospects. The issue then rested between Moneymore and Wrackeen. From 132 yards behind, 'Warepa threaded his way through his field ' to fill third place. It was a good performance.
