4 New Zealand v. New South Wales On Saturday Night The overture to an attractive programme of fights will be staged m Dunedin on Saturday night.
THAT evening Johnnie Leckie will meet Archie Hughes, featherweight champion of New South Wales, for a purse of £200. With . the arrival m New Zealand of Tommy Barber and Norman Radford, under engagement to the Otago Association, patrons are now assured of a first-class fight weekly for at least the next six weeks. They are indeed fortunate ih having such an enterprising body as the Otago executive catering for their requirements. Hughes is a natural feather-weight and has not experienced the same trouble as did Norman Gillespie m keeping his weight down to the nine -stone limit. In his work-outs at Tommy Harrisgym, he has proved himself a fast and
elusive boxer possessing tons of pluck. He has the record of never oeing stopped, and Dunedinites are speculating on his chances when, stacked against Leckie, who, has to date, an undefeated, record singe .entering professional ranks. Leckie had a let-up after fighting Billy Melton and is m great shape for his next contest. On Saturday -week, Hughes will meet Tommy Griffiths with a stake of £.150 attached to the dispute. It is probable that Fred Smitheram and Steve Hughes, two local welters, will fight a ten-round professional preliminary to the Griffiths— Hughes fight. Smitheram has done a lot of sparring with ' Leckie and is an "" improving fighter.
