NEARLY THREE WEEKS TO SORT THEM
Looking Over Weights For Wellington Steeplechase And The Winter Hurdles HORSES THAT STAND OUT MOST PROMINENTLY THE SECOND LE.G of the winter treble— Ellerslie is the first and Riccarton the last— will' be decided at Trentham m the second week m July. Handicaps were issued early this week and those who are interested m ante-post betting will have all but three weeks to sort out the winners. Judging by the hiding the layers received over the two Northerns it is, not likely the double will be run on the two jumping events. *
N certain quarters, of course, it will 'be worked out that way, but though most will be on the Steeplehase and the Whyte Memorial, that rill not take' any of the interest away rom the two best endowed races. In neither the Wellington Steeplechase, nor /the Winter Hurdies, has the handicapper had any trouble m getting his top weight. For the three and a-quorter mile ross-cduntry event Beau Cavalier cads the list with 11.13, three pounds jas than he had m the Northern, and pound less than when he fell the last ay at Ellerslie. The big fellow failed at Ellerslie— f ter winning the Hurdles — but co"ming n fresh at Trentham he may do better. His first race has always been his est and thus it will be dangerous to ripe him but, even with all his weight. Glendowie won the Northern with .7 and two days later a rise of a stone ailed to stop him. . Now he 1 has gone up another twelve ounds, bringing his poundage to 11.5. 'hat is about hfs mark, biit allpwing jr the improvement that could be lade m him m the interim it is difficult j go past him when looking for the r inner. At Auckland his owner stated that rlendowie would not run m the Welllgton Steeplechase — that he would be a.ved for the National. Possibly he has changed his mind since then and. it is to be hoped he has. ■ All want to see him try and emulate he feat recorded by Beau Cavalier ist winter. Tuki meets Glendowie on twentyour pounds better terms than when he an second m the Northern. That day Tuki ran as good a race as c ever has, but went down to a uperior horge. Next month Tuki will be therebouts at the finish, but he may not be ust equal to winning. Comical is improving a little and he ot round the last day at Ellerslie. Till he actually wins one the public i most cases will be satisfied to let im run against them. To "N.Z. Truth" the most dangerous ne.to dispose of next month will" be [awini. To date he has been the unluckiest of unlucky horses/ but sooner or later , the spell must break for hfm. > •• . Decently served with a rider he Js he one tp. expect the opposition from. i prominently on the flat early In the meeting he will be very well supported, i Red Fuschia is rated, the second best hurdler — Comical on the same mark is, or was, temporarily out of the game — and it will not be long before he is advanced to the position' of honor. It is hard to say Just what Red Fuschia might be capable of. To date a wise policy of not rushing him at long-distance ; events has been practiced and he has been gradually taken from mile and a-half races till now he is set to run six furlongs further. Comical was a better hurdler than he is ever likely to be 'chaser and the wonder is he has not been sent back to the small batten branch. For tote bettors nothing will ap- •■ peal more than the bracket, Perle de Leon and Gaze. The former went slightly wrong prior to the big hurdles at Ellerslie-^ galloping on that sand track fixed nim —but he is. now reported all right. Such a wonderful stayer m receipt of nearly a stone from Red Fuschia looks a great bet, and, when he has the added attraction of a stable-mate nearly as good,' the wager Is a wonderful one. • ' ■ Gaze "won the Hawkes Bay Hurdles m a jog and the three races he had up the Bay would make him a fit horse for Trentham. ■ Let the two take their places m the field and there will be no need to look further for the favorite. Kawini and Beau Cavalier are on the same mark with 10.2, and the former is better liked. .. The race m the Steeplechase .will probably find the latter out. Zircon has won the race before and he likes the mud, and that makes him. a possibility. \ , • After • his Northern failures most will want to see Aberfeldy regain his confidence. . He may do this at Trentham and then come into the limelight for' the National. ' ■ Pouri will go well, but may fail over the last two furlongs and Uralla may be m the same.boat. . Mia Bella was second m the Northern, but' then there was little left up and she failed m the succeeding days. Kaikahu Is a moderate sort and so is Kilburn. He won a hack race . at Ellerslie — it caused a lot of unnecessary comment, too — but In • this bunch he will probably be lost. Nearly one half of the handicap is m: on the minimum and they are jri their right position. The winner should not come from there. At this stage the best liked four are Perle de Leon, Red Fuschia, Nukumai and Gaze.
