SECOND ROUND

But Fared No Better Than Before (From "N.Z. Truth's" Auckland Rep.) Ida Evelyn Halpin Seagar/ who was unsuccessful m her attempt to have Alfred Rupert Feast adjudged the father of her child last November, made a further-effort m the same direction last week before Magistrate McKean. "THE relationship between these two— 1 which commenced m the Newmarket reserve and lasted for several months., during which their amiable indiscretion was continued at frequent intervals— would seem to have reached a climax when Ida found that she was m a certain condition. Alfred we,nt ,to sea on the S.S. Marama. . On the return from one of his trips, instead of being greeted with love and feminize cajolery, he bumped into a piece of' 1 biue paper which resulted m his appearance m court. It had the effect of knocking him back so far as his affection for Ida was concerned. By no. means disheartened with the result of her first attempt to lay the cause of her trouble at Alfred's door, Ida made another effort to compel her former sweetheart to contribute towards the support of her child, ,which she brought to court with her. . Lawyer Matthews acted for Ida, who I -went into the witness-box and gave extensive evidence as to matters which had preceded the birth of her child. Her evidence, though m many respects the same as m the previous case, was considerably augmented, [while Alfred, so to speak, sat pat m his denial. I DIDN'T BELIEVE HER j Magistrate McKean, m summarising the position, made it quite clear that he was not willing to adjudge Alfred the father of her child. ' "I am unable to believe the girl, who has supplemented her evidence to such an extent since the first hearing. "A witness who contradicts herself, as she has done, cannot expect to get the court to believe her. | "She says she was flustered, but she was flustered, on. so many occasions . . . and it was not under crossexamination. "She contradicts her. evidence-in-chief. * If I could believe her evidence, it might make a difference, but I am unable to do that m this case. Her evidence is very unsatisfactory." Lawyer R. Moody, who acted as before for Alfred, asked for costs against Ida, saying: "They may give us another' try." . ; ■ Lawyer Matthews retorted: "I don'.t think they will give it another' go." • ■ To this the Bench added: "If she had given'on the flrst occasion the evidence she has given to-day, I might have believed her." . ■■ ' «^^— — * •» WHAT WOMEN WANT.
