PAUL'S GOSPEL
Worshipper At Shrine Of Bacchus (Prom "N.Z. Truth's" Dunedin Rep.) Victim of an , insatiable thirst, James Cruickshank Paul, a young salesman, was unable to appreciate the benefits of three chances extended him by a lenient magistrate. PAUL first ' fell foul of the law In April last year, when he stole an overcoat from a Dunedin dance -hall, i It was said m his favor that there | was a degree of drunken folly and drift In his actions, so he was granted probation for twelve months, Paul is a clever salesman, and on this account his employer and the probation officer were inclined to give him a chance. On a charge of stealing £18 of his employers' money three, weeks later, with which he went on an orgy of drinking at Waimate, he was or39red to come up for sentence if called upon and had hla probation extended for a further twelve months. Such leniency is seldom extended to those who cannot abide by the law, but Paul, is one on whom leniency is wasted. . Three weeks ago, while m Christchurch, he again went on a drinking bout, but at the expense of his employers. ■ He subsequently gave himself up to the Christchurch police while m a state of delirium tremens. "The probation officer has given me a fair spin, but drink is my trouble," was Paul's only, answer to the magistrate when asked to account for his misbehavior and careless disregard of the chances he had been given. Magistrate Bartholomew decided that a period of reformative detention for a year might help to overcome Paul's desire to quench his thirst at other people's expense. . , iiiiiiiuiiiiiiiiiiiiiiuiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiniiiiiiiiiriiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiniiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiimiiiiii iiiiiiiiniiiiiiiiiniiniiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiHMiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiMiiiiiiiiiiimiiiiiiiiiiuiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiii
