On a charge of stealing £18 of his employers' money three, weeks later, with which he went on an orgy of drinking at Waimate, he was or39red to come up for sentence if called upon and had hla probation extended for a further twelve months. Such leniency is seldom extended to those who cannot abide by the law, but Paul, is one on whom leniency is wasted. . Three weeks ago, while m Christchurch, he again went on a drinking bout, but at the expense of his employers. ■ He subsequently gave himself up to the Christchurch police while m a state of delirium tremens. "The probation officer has given me a fair spin, but drink is my trouble," was Paul's only, answer to the magistrate when asked to account for his misbehavior and careless disregard of the chances he had been given.
