One of Our Poets

"THERE is a story told of an old-time 1 New Zealand doctor that he was a

first-class surgeon, and, under initials (aay, A.8.) published some execrable slush as poems. , Having performed one of his excellent operations on a woman patient, he was surprised to find the results less satisfactory than usual. Then came a day when a new interest entered her life and her condition improved: "It's those lovely ppems of A.8., doctor, they Just made me pull myself together." The verses of William A. Crawford, published by the Unity Press, Auckland, are far above this description, but certainly they are capable of bringing balm to many a heart. New Zealand scenery is touched upon m the poem "New Zealand," • also "Picto n " and "Woodstock," while "Anzao Day" and dreamily romantic subjects are also represented.

urawtora has written other booklets, mostly for private circulation, "For King ana Country," "A Seaside Holiday," etc. He Is of a Dunedin family, has visited the Old Country to admire places of literary interest and at pre- . sent is .travelling to Honolulu, where the beautiful scenery and picturesque ways of the natives will further inspire a pen not deficient m true poetic feeling.
