FOR CHARITY

[ Lively Rugby For Good Cause (From "N.Z. 'Truth's" Wanganui Rep.) Slinging their' weight about for the sake of charity { Wanganui's jersey men added a tincture of- rip " to the Rugby fare and a fillip to the unemployment fund. . TECHNICAL College Old Boys de- ; * feated Old Boys m, the dying stages of the ganie by. 6 to 4. There was nothing very brilliant m the play, and most of the time it was of a scramfoly nature. The willingness of the Technical forwards gave the backs of' the , blues very little opportunity, and m consequence there was little for the spectators to see of the customary passing flashes of Old Boys. ■Of the latter. team, Carlson was the only player to show rep. form.' Cox; their veteran wing-forward, : did not exert himself overmuch, but when difficulties arose on the- defensive m the 25 it was a treat to' see how he showed the younger players the way to tackle. There is no doubt that. Technical have improved their combination considerably and they should now ; show up much beliter m. the. second round of the Cup fixtures. IT'S INHERENT . - A recent addition to their ranks is : Tilley,. from the Technical College senior team. When his team were one point behind, he accepted a pass and put m a splendid run,- • scoring at the flag, thus making the difference between victory and defeat. • He ris also, a fine long-distance kick and sent oyer a goal from well out./ Incidentally, * he is a chip of . the old block, as . his father, Harry Tilley, was a top-notch player m his day and represented Wanganui on several occasions. Tilley, senior, was a- good threequarter and very reliable as a fullback. He was also a splendid placekick, y . After a very even and- willinglycontested game, Kaierau • beat Pirates by 7 points to 3. Pirates missed the services of Jackson, one of their best forwards, who is on the sick-list. Pirates played with plenty of vim until well through the game, when they commenced to sag. . Tasker played solidly m the forwards and received. good support from Anderson and Nodwell. Persson, the well-known Pirate hooker and rep., has gone to Welling- " ton to. reside. He will be a decided : loss to the blacks. , County, who ,went under to Technical Old Boys last week, met Ratana at ; the Pa grounds and scored an easy J win over ; the Maoris by 10 to nil. The Maoris sparked up -willingly for a while, but faded out of the picture, and County slackened the pace. Lack of training is obviously the fault of the Maori team. However, they are good losers and entertain the teams well when . they visit the pa, so that most of the players how -look upon it as a , picnic when their teams are billed to I play at Ratana. «, The positions of the teams at the end of the first round are: Marist 12, , Pirates -7, Kaierau 6, County 6, Old . Boys 5, Technical Old Boys 4, Ratana 2.
