MANY constables take it upon themsejves to give the Eng- , lish language a shocking hiding and throw the bits to the four winds; but ' one young constable the other day thought he would change all that and blossom out as a red-hot pedant. "Whilst there I didst hear a noise!" he declared heroically. ■
