DAY AT NAPIER PARK
WitEThe Nine-stone Minimum v In Operation
The last day of Ellerslie in winter generally ushers in the nine sto^ef minimum, but this year the meeting missed.
£ROM the seventh 6f June till the end L of August the minimum in all flat races must nbt be below that figure, and tb!e meeting to first race under that scale this year is Napier Park. ; • _■• '■' :;■;. "' '■• ' <•■'•■ That meeting opens, the week's racing Jn Hawkes Bay. It cannot but be admitted that the Park looks like being a very poor gathering. For some time now the club has been up against it, and stakes have so eon'-' tracted that they are hardly worth racing for. v - ; . . The big event of the day is only yorth two hundred to the winner, and ie is a game man— -of avaricious — who tepa out a crack 'chaser for so poor a urn. . Puwhero with all his weight will be avorite if he runs in the Napier Steeplechase, but "N.Z. Truth's" adice would bo to let him stop in his ox. . ; ' " ■■ ■ ■. ' ; ■ With Puwhero not running, the ' next best is Mixed Heather; His Wanganui form was good. . The principal flat race Is the mile, Stewards. ;' . Once more back to Wanganui form, Jeaumont would have a show, He 'ailed at Otaki, but now he will get a stronger riclerv ,Addlepate and Kaiti are bracketed and the elect will do well, while of the ■emainder, I4n Arlington,, always runs »ut the journey well. There is a big field handicapped for the Hack Huddles arid with the acceptances — not to hand at time of writing -it would be easier to forecast the betting. »
Peshwa and Tiallyfarhon were in the picture at Wanganui, and Braeman, at the same meeting, in far superior class, was up fourth twice; Perhaps they may be a trio, to take into account. J ;'• . . Usually the hack steeplechases on this track find a lot of runners out,, arid there are falls galore. Such a state of affairs will' probably prevail again on Saturday. '.. The two best-performed in the race, on recent doings, are Son o' Mine and Radiate. ' ''O A .. The former gives indications of turning out good, 'while Radiate was winning 1 comfortably at Wanganui when he fell on the flat after jumping the last with .a commanding lead. There are a few good ones in the Meeanee hack five — and aplenty of the rough variety; .. • ( : „ . Jockeys and post positions will count for^a lot in such a scramble; . Keen is not going out unsupported this time, while the bracket, J?\ee Simple—Le Champ, will have supporters. • Whatever Jim Morris gets, on in " the Bracelet should be favorite— and will probably win. To finish the. day is a seven -furlong hack race, and once again the absence of acceptances is confusing, .. hot to mention a nuisance. Three • from Hastings -r- Clayers, Crishna and High Heather— read as well as anything elae. . ■ "THERE was ]a. parcel of money foi? 1 English-bred Lorient . II. ; both starts at Ellerslie, but no dividends. Maybe that winter turf conditions are against one with his speed.
