Believes That All's Right With World

HE is a man of equable temperament and ineffable cheerfujpess who can contemplate a cool thousand go west and still smile upon a hard world. True, the fifty score that Charles Jones, of Christchureh, missed from his credit balance evaporated in a brief round of hectic magnificence. For Charles is a principal of the firm of Drayton Jones; while perplexed, directors wondered at dwindling returns, a bright little lady secretary gave sumptuous parties to select friends. Magnanimous, too, she was, for she even Invited the principals to partake of her choice fare. But the smile of Charles has lately been brightened by a glow of satisfaction. The thousand has not precisely returned to its rightful haven, but the auditor who so inadvertently swallowed, the cooked figures of the fair and ingenuous book-keeper has delved out crinkling notes quite as good. Not that Charles ever lost any sleep over the matter. Neither a philosophic doubter nor an incurable optimist, he is content to believe that all is right with this old world. . . . Mayor Archer has more than a considerable circle of acquaintances, but Chas, Jones would find it hard to traverse a block of Manchester Street without a score of greetings from, friends; Not only is he someone quite noticeable in the kingdom of soft goods, but he has a mind and an energy that simply trembles with ideas about motors and big buildings'. Versatility in business is little short of a virtue with him. He travels so frequently between the islands that the ferry gangway has become as familiar to him as the gravelled footpath to his front door. 'Tis even said that the last enquiry from the bridge before letting go the ropes; "Is Jones aboard?" has been .distinctly heard on shore. i Extremely and quite unreasonably reticent about his achievements in— and patronage of — sport, it is a fact that he carries a little talisman which entitles him for his lifetime to enter Lancaster Park without dipping for the nimble shilling. A keqn man of affairs, he is also a good mixer; which means, of course, that he is a genial, human chap who can shut away business problems while the lightness and brightnesa of ftife is waiting to be caught.
