TOO SUDDEN
Cross-country Date Criticized : 'I . ■ (From "N.Z. Truth's" •.■Wellington Rep.) Something of a bombshell was dropped last week when it was announced that the N.Z.C.C.G. was to be held at Wanganui on July 21. PLUBS m Wellington were naturally keenly disappointed' over the date and the general query was: "Can we get our men fit by that time?" At such short notice it seems hardly possible and it behoves the various harrier sub-committees to try and alter it. " ■ ■ ' j August is the month generally approved by all clubs for championship dates and no doubt the "centre" would arrange matters differently if the situation was made clear ,to them. LAST YEAR'S MUDDLE • Last year there was a vexatious muddle over the same fixture and harrier controlling bodies should have first consideration, as it entirely depends upon them whether the teams are fielded or not. J. Shephard (Wellington) -returned fastest time for the Press Cup, m 32min. 16sec. Shephard is .upholding his prestige of : .last season V-and he ought to find no difficulty /m winning the Wellington ;Club championship. W. Whelan (Wellington)' proved that he is still to be; reckoned* wi-thA as only 37 seconds separated him from the winner. A. Hivon has evidently not come up to this standard of running yet, as he was predicted to be m the first two;. A pleasing feature of the race was L. Watson's placing. To run into third place stamps him as a dangerous opponent for J. Shephard. : Watson will do considerably bjetter before the season terminates. > Fred Silver'is well on the way to recovery after his recent operation, and he will be right into the fray m a/week or two. ;.j S. C. Ferguson,- Scottish ./Club's champion sprinter, ran a great race m the 300 yds. sprint on Saturday.' From the scratch mark, he overhauled the handicap men m fine style and, putting m a great finish he dashed m to win by inches. He will make a great wing threequarter for the Scottish Club, as he possesses the necessary qualifications both as a footballer and a sprinter. -Being well over twelve stone he will take a lot of .stopping on the field of play for. the Ingram'Cup. FLEW AT IT Andrews and Bayne (Hutt Valley) fought out a great race for supremacy m the five-mile sealed handicap. Andrews won by a yard after an exciting finish m 37min. 40sec. Bayne's time was 37min. 40 l/ssec. Bayne is a well-known track runner who has met the best, including R. A. Rose whom he defeated from the scratch mark over a mile course last season. , Eve is making a good showing at the cross-country game. They held a three-mile run last week and proved that they have the necessary stamina and grit. Miss Price had the misfortune to injure her ankle, which necessitated an early retirement on her part from the run. .'
