Popular Prosser
WHEN the "Maheno" sped south a few days ago to prepare for taking over her share of the inter-island ferry work, the man m charge of things was Captain Prosser, that past-master m the art of handling the many and arduous duties entailed m this class/ of work. .;
To see him bring a fast steamer alongside a wharf is to see a real artist at work. There's no stalling, backing and filling when Prosser is giving instructions. ;
He manages to work without fuss and without bother. He has your real sailor's ability to get things done the simplest way— and the men under him always become affected with their skipper's consistent cheeriness and optimism.
His' friends? They're all over the world! For the genial captain has visited many ports and many countries. Nearer home, there are hosts of people m our seaport towns who anticipate the arrival of Prosser.
And when he was on the run between Wellington and Picton, he formed many a friendship that will endure.
At times, he has been known to swing a wicked knee" m the dance; but this is just further proof of the fact that, on the bridge or m the ballroom, a sailor is never dismayed. •'
There is. however, no truth m the rumor that all the dogfish around Wellington's wharves have declared that — under Prosser's command — the old
"Maheno" will gee-up to such an extent that the harbor won't be safe for piscatorial inhabitants. .
