MODERN TYRES
Sacrifice Service The introduction of the balloon tyre m the last three years has been developed to its logical or rather illogical conclusion, that is, a very small wheel with a very large tyre, but smaller m diameter than the old high pressure tyre. THESE small diameter wheels cer- *• tainly give a car a dainty and stylish appearance, but it is questionable whether they are going to be satisfactory m the matter of service, which is, after all, a far more important consideration, i A tyre with a diameter of 27 inches makes 70,000 more revolutions m every 1000 miles than a tyre of 30 inches, so that it can -readily be seen that the smaller tyres, •which seem to be the vogue recently, . cannot possibly have the same life, especially on roads such as we have to travel on m New Zealand. Some American cars are the chief offenders m this respect, and NewZealand agents would be doing the motoring public a service if they urged the makers to fit larger wheels and tyres, even at the sacrifice of a very small amount of comfort.
