A SENSATION was caused m Palmers^on South last week when a well-known shopkeeper was arrested on a serious charge concerning a young girl between the age of 10 and. l 2 years. He appeared at the Dunedin Police Court the following day before Magistrate Bartholomew, when he was charged with the offence, which allegedly occurred on May 5. Detective Lean, who applied for a remand for a week to Palmerston South, asked that if the bench allowed bail it should be substantial, as further charges of a similar nature were pending. Lawyer C. J. L. White, instructed by Lawyer A. C. Hanlon, agreed to the remand and applied for bail. Accused was released on bail of £200 and one surety of £200, while publication of his name was suppressed pending the facts being gone into.
