CHARGE AGAINST MARRIED WOMAN

(From "N.Z. Truth's" Special* Dunedin Representative.) I OOKING little the worse for her week's confinement m the cells, the young married woman, charge.d with assaulting Charles Wilfred Waldren, on May 18, s.o as to cause him actual bodily harm, appeared on remand m the Dunedin Police' Court jast week, when a further remand was granted. . The woman's face still bore signs of conflict m a badly blackened eye which seemed to have made little improvement since she first appeared m the- dock. Chief Detective Cameron stated that Waldren, though still m hospital, was almost well enough to leave the institution. He would be able to proceed with the case tomorrow (Friday). In 'reply to Lawyer Claude White's application for bail, the chief detective said it was not a case m which bail should be granted. Accused had been living with the injured man; apart from that, the chief detective did not think she had a home or friends to go to. Moreover, the evidence might disclose sufficient facts on which the Crown could prefer a more serious indictment. , . Lawyer White: "Even m the most serious charges, it is usual to grant bail once the injured party is out of danger. The accused has relatives m the. court." . * The Magistrate: "Is this an assault of a serious nature?" Chief Detective: "The suggestion is, sir, that she attacked Waldren with a tomahawk while he was asleep." . * After standing the ca.se down to discuss with the probation .officers the matter of the accused being under proper control, the magistrate declined to grant bail m the meantime and renewed the order suppressing accused's name: until the facts of the case are gone into.
