FENCES TOTAL TWENTY-FIVE

What the Winner of the Great Northern Steeples Has To Do

(From "N.Z. Truth's" Special Auckland Representative.) MO Jumping event In the Dominion creates more Interest than the ** Great Northern Steeplechase. ■ If proof of this is needed one has only to gaze at the hundreds which can be seen on every vantage point outside the course itself, these hundreds including many non-supporters of racing and who probably, have never been on a race-course. It is absolutely amazing to note the vast crowd which line tha fence on the top of the hill m Lady's Mile. In all, there are 25 obstacles to be negotiated m the Great Northern Steeplechase, which is run over a course described as being about three miles and three-quarters, though it is possibly, a shade over the actual distance mentioned. It is that competitors have to negotiate the hill throe times which appeals mostly to enthusiasts, and this year spectators will have a much clearer view than formerly, for all the trees on the grandstand side of the hill have been removed. Hero are the jumps m order as they have to be cleared: Ist— Hurdle, 3ft. 6in. 14th— Same as fifth. 2nd — Brush hurdle, 3ft. 10in. 15th — Same as sixth. 3 r{ j — pp S t and rail fence, 3ft.
