MEMBERS of hospital boards come and go, . but a good secretary, for-

tunatelyvfor the oommunity, Is not menaced by threats of polling day* For a good secretary is the rock on which the whole administration of a public hospital is built. A rock of knowledge and reliability is '^William* Shakespeare Wharton, seoretary of the North Canterbury Hospital Board. Genial of countenance, Wharton carries the great weight of his responsibilities with ease and placid demeanor. But then he knows his job Inside and put — and when a man knows that he has nothing to fret about.

Nothing can happen at the Christohurch hospital without Wharton knowing all about it. He la an encyclopaedia and has never been stumped for an answer when he has been asked a question concerning the hospital or the board's activities. It is difficult to imagine what the board members would do without Wharton at their elbow to "put them wise" to a host of things that clamor for attention. Men of his knowledge and experience seldom get the appreciation that is their due, but ask any member of the board what they think of Wharton, and — well, he's popular and then some.
