Yet Would Have Been Dead Stiff To Have Lost It is something in the nature of Irish to flay in one breath that a horse was lucky to win and then follow it up by saying he would have been unlucky to have lost.

\7ET such is the case with the wlnI a«r of this year's Marton Cup — Stormy. As the race was run he was unlucky, but as the finish was fought out he was lucky. After his display the first, day at Awapuni, most were prepared to see him get into -winning form in the very near future. This he did on the last day of the meeting and notwithstanding the fact that he was very sore he was at a 'short price for the Marton Cup. Tie got away beautifully and Ellis dropped in behind the two leaders. He could not have been better placed, but you never can tell! Thus it happened on the turn going out of the straight that there was some terrible interference and Avro landed right back on top of Stormy. The favorite hit the fence and. then

bounced out into the middle of the field — all but knocked over himself, with those in his vicinity also sufferin a like fate. Back on to his feet again, Ellis gradually drew up, and at the home he was on terms with the leaders. • Once straightened up, Ellis went away, but he had no sooner hit the front than danger threatened. Henna was -looming up on the outer and each stride saw her get nearer and nearer. It looked a good thing for her to beat the favorite, but while Ellis was riding for dear life the kid on Henna was sitting still. It was only a question of pulling the stick and the mare would have responded. But no, the kid would not — or J could not.

That is where Stormy was lucky to win the Cup.
