SCHOOLBOYS ?

"Juveniles" In

Excelsis

It is noteworthy that the contestants for the championships of Australia and New Zealand decided at Wellington last week included no less than three "schoolboy wonders."

THEY were James Carlton (St. 1 Joseph's College, Sydney), C. Stuart (Church of England Grammar School, Sydney) and E. M. Davidson (College, Melbourne). Carlton's winning has caused greav enthusiasm in Sydney and there is no doubt that he is a valuable find. The same applies to Stuart, who has cut out the half-mile in under 2min. and Davidson, who has cleared over six feet in the high jump. . At the same time it is somewhat misleading to dub these lads schoolboys, as there is' nothing of the primary schools touch about any of them and each could give points in development to the average man.

CaVlton, the "school-boy" for instance, is 19 years of age, is round about six feet in height and scales nearer 12 stone than 11.

As a runner he has a good deal to learn and his action bespeaks power and natural ability rather than grace. A little bit of scientific coaching would work wonders in him. The same applies to Stuart who is a big, wellbuilt athlete with great possibilities. He runs a faithful half-mile from start to finish and should go far if handled along the right lines. Davidson is a typical high jumper's build, tall and slight with plenty of spring in his carriage.

Although less heard of than the other two, his performances to date are really of more solid merit, having cleared the bar at over six feet, and with his brief experience of competition, it is indeed noteworthy.
