WIFE'S MONEY

Young Matu Rangi's Love Story

(From "N.Z. Truth's" Gisborne Rep.) The little love story of Matu Rangi, a smart young Maori, is not going to be a serial after all.

TNSTEAD of the curtain rising again •*• after the first act and the drama unfolding the intricacies of Rangi's marriage to a woman with £1000 and seventy summers to her credit; of his alleged desertion of her almost immediately afterwards; and of his stolen honeymoon with a , maiden of fewer years — but greater attractions — on his wife's money, there was a brief announcement and "Finis" was written to the story.

It will be remembered that when Rangi made his initial appearance before the court it was explained that after his early desertion of his aged wife he and the young woman with whom he joined forces left Gisborne for Christchurch, proceeded later to Auckland and were actually on the boat for Sydney under the names of "Mr. and Mrs. Martell" whin • Rangi was arrested. . In the meantime the £1000 which his trusting spouse had handed over had dwindled to £300. It *was suggested that further charges were pending against the accused and when the case was adjourned bail was fixed in the substantial sum of £ 1000, with sureties for a similar amount. But notwithstanding the somewhat sensational . preliminr :-ies the charge of failing to provide for the maintenance of his wife has been withdrawn. When the case whs called on again, Lawyer Pat. Nolan briefly repeated tfee facts and said that £300 of the wife's money had been recovered. ji was not thought possible to d.o anything further in the matter and he asked that the charge be withdrawn.
