"Big Jim " Martin
UT)IG JIM" MARTIN has an eye. D Matter of fact, he has — like most
people — a pair of them. But in Jim's case they happen to be of a particularly quick and keen variety and the use made of them and a flexible wrist has nonplussed many a cricketer and billiardist in Canterbury, where he, has spent the greater part of his life.' .
He trundled valiantly for Sydenham for many seasons and more than once was within coo-ee of inter-provincial cricket. And his big, powerful frame enabled him to lay on the wood right merrily when he was in the mood. In the postmaster's official residence at Sumner, Christchurch — yes; Jim is postmaster at that sheltered seaside suburb — can be pointed out several trophies that commemorate his skill with bat, bait and cue.
Like so many ex-leather hunters, he has lately become enamored of the coy and elusive "L.ady Kitty" and the Sumner green is therefore due to see some pretty wrist play and subtle swerve once Jim gets his eye in.
