Jovial Jack

•THERE is a man in Palmerston South 1 who is so confident of his ability

to educate hens that in fhe near future he hopes to train them to lay eggs already stamped. You're right! Of course, it's Jack Appleby. Jack is afflicted with a tremendous popularity in his district. Perhaps it is through his ability to play any musical instrument — wood, string or wind.

Perhaps, again, his endless supplies of stories, redolent of the sort of humor everybody enjoys, is to blame. He is that type of man who simply won't take life seriously. Yet he has an eye to business. Last, but far from least, Appleby is an authority on the busy bee. When the sun is sinking in the west he loves to stand outside the hives . watching the little workers buzzing home from toil. And, when the last bee has signed off for the night, when the last white leghorn has sought / its perch, Jack drapes himself over/ his armchair to gaze at his scores of photographs or to enjoy the latest book at his leisure.
