WAS TOO SORE
And Could Not Go
Past Turns
By watching a horse in its preliminary, very often can be told, — or guessed — its chances in the race. THIS week anyone who watched Piuthair go down prior to the running of the Manawatu Cup would not have been on the mare. j doing on her form last season, and on the weight allotted to her, she should have been all but a good thing. In the birdcage she looked the part — though she appeared to be fretting more than the occasion demanded. She jumped away well enough, but when she hit the first turn she could not go with them and her rider was i kicking her up to her work. j Down the straight the first time | she appeared to go all right, but once she hit the turn again she was all at sea. Then down the back stretch she was always in difficulty and once or twice she seemed to lose sight of the ground and stumble. t She made a half-hearted run in the straight and finished up at the I post in thir.d. position. After the race quite a number were heard blaming her rider, and for such nasty remarks "N.Z. Truth" avers they owe Eric Manson an apology. INITIAL DISPLAY, J7OR a beginner at the racing game, * Golden Armour made quite a respectable showing when he filled second berth in the Robinson Handicap at Ellerslie on Boxing Day. * This is the Leighton — Sungleam filly from Mason's stable. It seems certain that she will turn out a much more profitable investment to follow than Haze did as a hack from the same quarter.
