WAS BAD LUCK
If Lady Desmond Had Lost Had Lady Desmond lost the Manawatu Cup it would have been purely a question of bad luck. THE Limond mare was favorite at *■ the finish of betting operations, though not much more so than Pluthair. She got perhaps the best of the barrier rise. But once the mare found her stride Jack Barry was content to allow her to settle down just in behind the leaders. There he kept her all the first mile and a furlong-, and coming to the turn for home she looked a good thing. She was just bowling: along in behind the two leaders, but once heads were straightened up there was a thrill for her supporters. Barry tried to push the lady up in between two horses; she got half-way through and the gap was closed. He had then to drop back and wait. His waiting was ended when Joy Bird just came away from the rails. Then Barry kicked her up. The favorite went into the opening, but once she got into it she did not appear to be pleased. Her rider kept at her and she won.. Had she been beaten it would have been the worst of bad luck.
