Getting Results At Hie Wheel
Many owners who run a popular make of car are frequentlydisappointed with the performance of their mounts when they read of those put up by experienced drivers, whioh are frequently advertised or made public through the press.
QOMETIMES there is . an inclination O to take the Btory with a grain of salt, but it can be taken that m 99 cases out of 100 no exaggeration has been made. The difference In the performance of any two cars Is nearly always due to the difference m driving. With identical cars one owner will get, say, 25 m.p.ff., will take a one m six hill m top gear, and will attain, say, 60 m.p.h. Another will eat up a gallon of petrol after 16 or 16 miles, will need to take every respectable hill m second gear, and will probably not do more than 45 m.p.h, all out. It is just a matter of driving, and any owner whose oar is apparently not capable of putting up a standard performance can easily remedy the trouble by applying himself to learn the art. Certainly a reasonable .amount of expert knowledge might be required to tune the carburettor, but this can be done by any competent mechanic at a low cost. The rest lies with the driver. As an instance, a good average performance by an Brskine has come under notice, and it should easily be equalled by any Erskine owner. The
oar referrea to, whioh was a stock model tourer, covered 900 miles on its flrßt big run. The fuel averaged 27 m.p.g., and on the trip one pint of oil was added to the sump and two pints of water to the radiator. Several Recent hills were encountered on the trip, but a change of gear was only necessitated on four oocasions. The operating expenses were a fraction under a penny par mile.
