New Zealand Golfers Who Will Be There
(From "N.Z. Truth's" Special Golf Correspondent.) CELECTING the players to represent New Zealand against Australia next month m the inter-State golf matches has not been an easy task for the N.Z. Golf Council.
SLOAN MORPETH (Auckland) and T. H. Horton (Masterton) have been definitely selected for the team and will most likely play as leadIng pair. . With so many aspirants for the remaining two places, the Golf Council have decided on the only possible plan to select the players. The open tournament at Wellington m January will be the test and players taking part m that meeting will be selected on the form they display there. " MENTIONED " Dr. Ross (Dunedin), A. D. S. Duncan (Wellington), N. C. Bell (Hamilton), A. S. Sime (Westport), J. L. Black (Hutt), H. B. Lusk (Auckland), D. Grant (Christchurch), Captain Conway (Wellington), and .J. L. Drake (Wellington) are "mentioned" as players whom the council favor. The tournament is sure to be a great success as other young players will compete m the endeavor to beat the scores of the selected golfers. More than one player Avho has shown 'good form at recent meetings has not been "mentioned." One m particular is Rana Wagg, of the Hutt G.C., who finished sixth m the open at Hamilton with scores of 76-78-73-81 — 308— eight strokes behind the winner. Wagg was only three strokes' behind Moss setting out on the final round, but struck trouble coming home and lost a winning , chance.
A young powerful player with a bag full of good shots, the writer will be surprised if he does not put forward a claim for one of the two places. The decision to select players on the form at this tournament will meet with satisfaction throughout the different centres as- it is undoubtedly the Dest method m the final selection. Grant 84-83-82-75—324 25 THEIR CHANCE Dr. Ross, Captain Conway and J. L Drake did not play at the tournament. Other young players who finished m front of several of the above-mention-ed players are Kapi Tareha, B. V. Wright, Morgan Duncan, C. F. Colbeck. Rex George. M. Mcßeth and R. D. Wright. They have the chance to prove themselves at the January tournament and each one is capable of returning scores as good as the selected two. The N.Z.G.C. are to be congratulated on their decision to select the final two players and this should settle all arguments and heartburnings as to who should be chosen.
