Morgan and Cleverly Are Worth Sending Abroad
Having considered Earl Stewart's report the Boxing Council has decided to recommend Ted Morgan and Alf. Cleverly as worthy representatives for the 1928 Olympic Games.
AFTER having closely followed tho careers of the two boys — both m public and m private — Stewart had no hesitation m naming them for next year's Olympiad at Amsterdam. The council, acting on this advice, then decided to send their names on for selection. The sending of " candidates to the Games is going to be a somewhat expensive proposition, but the financial outlay is more than merited. Though nothing definite has been said on the matter it is estimated that it will take somewhere m the vicinity of £400 per man. Thus to send both Morgan and Cleverly away a big hole will be made m £750. And boxing is only one phase of amateur sport that will — or at
least hopes — to be represented. Then there la the possibility of a third boxer being nominated for the trip overseas. This is the Auckland bantam, Jack O'Sullivan, who was mentioned m the report to the council. The controlling body has decided that the champion shall be tried out ! early m the new year, and O'Sullivan I has been advised to hold himself m readiness for such trial. The partner who will test Jack out will be either Tommy Griffiths or Johnny Leckie — probably both will be m the trial. Such a trial will enable Earl Stewart to form a definite opinion on the chances of O'Sullivan. It is to be hoped he comes through it with flying colors.
