BRILLIANT AUSSIE IS No. 1
George foul's Freak Sprinter In Railway Handicap
(From "N.Z. Truth's" Special Auckland Bepresentative.)' «
It was something new to fin d fewer acceptors for the Railway Handicap at Ellerslie than for the Auckland Cup, but hardly surprising when the quality of some of the sprinters engaged was taken seriously by owners of moderates.
THE best are full of promise, especially the three-year-olds, and
it was up to the rough stuff to go out and prevent the likelihood of a division. The speedy Aussie is now to carry No. 1 saddle-cloth and he is entitled to the honor after landing four open six-furlong sprints at Ellerslie during the last twelve months. None but a classy customer could be capable of such deeds and his supporters have little occasion to worry over two recent defeats with big loads. At Waipa last Saturday, Geoi'ge Paul's freak displayed sufficient dash to rush to the head of affairs early titlllillilllllllllllliiniilliiiiiiiiiiiiiiiinniiiiiiiiiiimiiiimiiiiiimuiiiimmiiiiiiimii
with 9.13, when he was eased m behind, and then failed to get Tea Time at the close, filling second berth only. Still, on a fine day, he should make better time with a stone less to carry, while his beginning dash of last weekend is seriously -noted. It may be no easy job for Aussie to beat the brilliant three-year-olds, but if they have a weak spot he has had the necessary racing to fit him to find them out. That is on a firm track. He is good and reeled off half m somewhere near 48 last week. Lysander is reported to be coming back, but from a standing start of late m public has not hopped oft with his former brilliancy. Joy King is always a possibility, but this may be too hard. Limited can go some at his best,
though the Absurds seldom Improve from four years up. Then comes Paganelli, which seems one to leave alone until the day, for he has cost double punters a small fortune recently by late withdrawals from, "second legs." He was reported amiss last week, but his party have since stated that ho threatens to be all right by Monday. If he is, then onlookers will observe his great pace once again — and he has a great deal more pace than the ordinary performer. He gave distinct evidence of this when he ran Aussie to a lip at Ellerslie m the spring and he has won since at Takapuna m hollow fashion. Nancy Lee would be a distinct possibility if the turf was on the soft side, though her party do not regard her prospects as hopeless m any going. As for Royal Damon, he will be tackling his best to date if started, while Cimabue should be improved from his easy victory at Woodville and can dap on the pace with the best. Money Order is the main southern hope. He is always going to beat the best, but haa yet to do so, though he Is }ikely to be In rare form. Paperchase is solid, but like Town Guard has the job m front m such a great field. Gascony gets off easy m poundage In the light of his best two-year-old form and those who saw him run 1.13 at Woodville will not hear of his defeat. He has a great show with 7.8, but will not have it his own way with the other speedy fliers. Silvermine will have a hustling horseman m Wiggins and is more than a possibility; his dam,* Silver Link, "won the same race m her day. As for Kingfleld, he has no great form this season as a recommendation. Sir Archie is on the improve, but may find the others a bit rich unless the tracks is soft. Awarere can go a little, while High, Finance has a good burst of speed, but usually fades the last furlong when the track is soft. On public form this season It really looks as if Aussie is going to be a source of annoyance to the best of the three -year -olds — • Paganelli, Cimabue and Gascony — over the last furlong. When, the line is crossed perhaps the judge will have to decide between AUSSIE, PAGANELLI, and CIMABUE.
