THE LAST LEG
Christmas Mile Is Tough (Prom "N.Z. Truth's" Special Auckland Rep.) One race on the Boxing Day programme at Ellerslie which creates great interest is the Christmas Handicap mile, for not only are doubles worked on this particular event, but trebles, also, and it is usually the concluding leg. COME really first-class horses have won this race m 'by-gone years. It is the medium whereby the real non-stayer and those not possessing the sprinting" ability to take on a Railway are afforded an opportunity of gathering 1 m a respectable stake. It is always hard to sort out the actual winner, and first favorites are mostly numbered among the slain — the "also -started" division. As usual, there is nothing sticking out as worth a solid punt on Boxing Day, though Jamieson's pair of three-year-olds, In The Shade and Ti Tree, will come m for attention. Both these won at Takapuna over seven furlongs. In The Shade may appeal most m view of the fact that he is the more massive oi! the pair and can run out the full distance all the way. Centerpiece must foe reaching his best form, while King Lu's great second m the ten -furlong Te Awamutu Cup shows him to be m great heart./ Pegaway may still want the race, Mosaic won last week, Laughing Prince will have the race to fit him for the Derby, while Dayguard, Valkon, Gala Day, True Blood, Llandudno and Don Jose can all 'go a merry mile and have won this spring. Master Doon seems to have lost his winning way, but at his best would keep the rest busy at 7.7 Doree was good enough to touch off Paleta over a similar distance m the H.B. Guineas. There are also High Pitch, which has not come back to his Railway form of last year, and Scat, a winner at Waipa, which will find this lot stronger to tackle. Romford may not be class enough, but Thaw must have a show with 7.2. Cohesion is more than a possibility. However, as already indicated, it is no poor punter's race, though horses m form which suggest themselves as ibeing m the picture at the right end are IN THE SHADE KING LU and LLANDUDNO. tiliiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiniiiiiiiitiiiiiiiiiiiiiiinniiiiMiiiiiiiinrtiniinnininiiiiiiniiiniui
