Walter's Shining Light
WATER realistically pouring all over the stage, snow apparently falling- on the heads of an audience, girls dancing while their costumes change without visible efCort — that is what SamoilofC theatrical lighting can and does achieve. When Samoiloff, the Russian theatrical lighting expert, startled , London and the world with a system whereby colored stage lighting-, cleverly arranged, changed the scenery and even the costumes of those who graced the stage, he had for his principal assistant one Walter Hall, a dapper little Englishman. Hall later on left for New Zealand and is now under engagement to Luna Park Amusements, Auckland. Wally has had a varied career, having been connected with theatrical and film business for over twenty-five j^ears. His wonderful lighting effects were fully Utilized by the Colliseum and Palladium, London, and when Samoiloff left for America he handed over all experimental work to Hall. It was then that Hall invented many auditorium effects which have since been copied m various parts _of the world. When war broke out Hall volunteered and was sent to Gallipoli, where his acquaintance with the New Zealanders created a desire to visit the Antipodes. After the war he drifted into the film business and eventually landed m Auckland.
