HAWKE CUP

Taranaki Is Prepared (From "N.Z. Truth's" New Plymouth Rep.) Taranaki is prepared to withstand thfe first challenge for the Hawke Cup at New Plymouth next Saturday and following days. TT is recognized that Wanganui, the ■*■ challengers, are a hard proposition and will leave no • stone unturned to regain the-cup which Taranaki lifted last year. Local enthusiasts are hopeful that it will still remain in the shadow of Mt. Egmont, although Clarke, who did such damage last year and McWhirter, a southern bowler, were absent from the north team. The match showed perhaps that while the batting, particularly of the north, -was strong and the fielding good all-round, the bowling' was not so strong. However, there is a useful slow bowler in A. Wilson, of Stratford, who only requires help from the field to be dangerous. Unfortunately Beck will be in Nelson with the High School team, .but'the selectors have chosen a strong thirteen in Kingston, Clarke, Lash, Naismith, McWhirter, Grayson, B. B. Wilson, A. Wilgpn, S. Lay, Cheevers, Hocken, H. R, Penny and Barker.

exuded health and confidence and after four laps he had the field strung out, and Randolph Rose, hero of a hundred races and holder of many records was flying distress signals. Just as Savidan was obviously fit, so was Rose clearly unprepared and it came as no surprise when after laboring round for another lap or so, he pulled up and walked off the track. W. K. Johnston (Wanganui) filled third place whilst Baynes (Wellington) from whom great things were expected, failed to see the journey out. Bayne is yet over-youthful for such select company. E. B. E. Taylor (Canterbury) was another who found that the penalty of unpreparedness is defeat. ROSE FADES Right merrily Savidan made the pace and he was well away from Rose before the journey was three pdrts over. Rose cried "enough" 220 yards from home and Savidan won with the greatest of ease in 4min. 26 2-ssecs. Gibbons (Wanganui) ran neavily and unimpressively and Bayne was never sighted. Priestly also failed and was beaten dpwn the straight by J. J. Morris (O.), a pupil of ex-champion Jimmy Beatson and a most promising: lad. The time was nowhere near

won easily both the discus and shot

McHolm collected the hammer by a close margin from Leckie and Harvey, but the winning throw of 13Sft. 2in. is not the best that any of the three is capable of. That brilliant all-rounder, E. G. Sutherland (Wellington), was scarcely off his feet all day. He won the long jump, was second to J. W. Shirley (Auckland) in the'hop, step and jump; was second in the high jump, pole vault and shot and was third in the javelin and discus. Miss Norma Wilson (Auckland) ran brilliantly in the 100 yds Ladies' Championship and carried the tape in the smart time of 12secs. Misses Swinburne and Collins (Wellington) were in the respective places and ran well, but found Miss Wilson just too good and too well trained. Canterbury's colors were nailed to the mast in the cycling events and were never hauled down. Grose proved to be a pedalling meteor and won all three titles with startling bursts. He was aided and abetted in his fell work by Day and Nankivell. Brynes and Wade (Auckland) and Oakley (Wellington) pushed their machines right manfully, but found the conditions too strenuous. The rest were outclassed.
