See How They Run
MERVETTE'S DOUBLE DERT TINKER shone out again as a trainer-rider at Taumarunui on opening day when he produced Mervette to win a double. Mervette is a four-year-old daughter of Lucullus from Brayton and gave Frazer Smith a long overdue winning turn: The crowd Mervette defeated were anything but good, but she did her work well and m%y be placed again for victory. THEY planked it on Air King at Taumarunui last Saturday in big wads, but when Mervette came along at the home turn it was all up with Loomb's charge. But Air King will win hack races. TTP MATAMATA way they have a u high opinion of High Rose as a hack sprinter. Nevertheless, she will hardly reach really good company. QPALOID is too small to make a real success of the hurdle business, but the little chap can jump cleverly. DUKERIMU is a likely sort to win a *■ hack race in this country. HURDLER OF PROMISE
THERE are hurdle A races in plenty aAvaiting Polyphemus, if his second to Revel last week is an indicator. For next to a beginner at the game, "Ngok" McDonald's horse gave a good exhibition out in front. The pace possessed by Polyphemus must get him' somewhere over obstacles, especially when
A. McDonald one cons iders the* moderate lot of fencers knocking about the country at the present time. I HER SECOND HANDICAP j THERE was not a great deal In the 1 Woodville Handicap victory of Joy Bird unless it was the popularity that attended another success for Owner Bill Higgins. The ten'furlongs took 2.11 on a track which could not be termed bad. Quite a lot of rain fell early in the day, but the going was improving all the time, aided by the strong wind. The' fact that Joy Bird missed at Feilding on the second day had punters off their guard and she returned a better price than expected. HELIGHTMENT'S mission is said to U be the Auckland Cup not the Railway. He will probably find the journey a bit lengthy. TF some of those near the minimum 1 in the Auckland Cup have a show then surely Transformer's party have every right to expect their horse to be worth starting, for he has won over a good middle distance and has been giving most of them a stone or more for some time. Now he is right alongside them. DALLACHULISH was everywhere in D the Taumarunui Cup and appeared to be more than Jockey Jones could manage. ; ■_✓ I EN DULIEU is off to Taranaki for *-* the Xmas meetings. DIPON ABBEY should improve a bit ** with racing. IN A JOG
ROYAL PICTURE was a long time doing the trick for John Taylor. k Continual racing i had something to 'do with his victory at Woodville, for in the Novice he was a lot more seasoned than the rest to run out six
furlongs. John Taylor Bert Ellis was In the saddle, and he could afford to look round and gig at the opposition in the run home. The English-bred grey won in a jog. FOR TARANAKI TRAINER GEORGE REID Intends taking Town Bird and Co. down Taranaki way for the holiday gatherings. Town Bird should be a prop and cop order in some of the short hack events down there. VENUS ABBEY can begin fast, but does not stay on too well. VOUNG PRETENDER will do better later on. SHOCKING RIDING UAD Abbess's rider kept her going from the home turn in the Matapuna Hack last Saturday, it is just possible she would have defeated Billikins. Abbess later ran second in the open sprnt, but had a stone 'less to carry. MISS EGYPT was produced at Taumarunui. If she stands, there may be a fair race within her. TF Value does not win a race in the A country quite a. lot of people will be disappointed. Due any time In a hack sprint. HOME HE CAME DOYALi DAMON went off with a bang ** first day at Woodville. He did it in taking fashion with 9.5 and was rushed on the tote the last bit. NOT SUCH A MORAL THOUGH Aston was backed as a 1 certainty for the five furlong hack event at Woodville, he did not have anything to spare to head off Helotis. The race on opening day evidently improved him and It is just as well it did. With a less heady rider on him Aston could easly have missed the bus. HIGGOTT'S JUVENILE FRANK HIGGOTT'S two-year-old * Moutoa Treasury, started off increasing Fred. Easton's banking account at Woodville, and when the filly learns to go round the bends more truly she may bob up again. She has speed to spare and was punched to victory in great style the last bit at Woodville by young Webster. Higgott made no secret of his belief that Moutoa Treasury was capable of winning a race at Woodville.
MAY BE SPELLED CID REID stated at Woodville that he ° intended to spell Chit for the present. The daughter of Paper Money looked a moral out in front the first day, but when challenged by Millais the. last bit she went under, though lasting long enough to gain second honors. There is no doubt about Chit's speed but there is not a great deal of her and she must have her own way and will hardly stand a strenuous battle. ANOTHER LEIGHTON jV/lILLAIS made marked improvement since the early spring and was fully expected by the right people to give the Nursery Handicap at Woodville a decent shake. The son of Leighton went down in his preliminary like a true galloper and when he loomed up on the outside to take the stake he did so in a manner which told that it will not be the last time he will be led in a winner by Bill McKinnon. He is of the stodgy order, but is a nice mover when he gets down to it. ON THE BIT PHELONE broke his maiden status at Woodville in convincing fashion. They were only a pack of trial platers, but the son of Leighton did it well, and may later on return some of that heavy purchase money which W. H. Gaisford parted with to secure possession last season, WAST ACRE was priced the other day v and only a thousand was asked. DERT ELLIS will be. riding at the u Oamaru meeting on Saturday. He will do Awapuni and Marton over the holidays.
| QUESTIONED | I I IMOSA'S supporters were very | | " annoyed over the judge's § = placings in the Wharite Handi- = | cap at Woodville on the opening § 1 day. = | There was no doubt about the | | winner, the difference of opinion § | existing over the minor plac* | | ings. | I There was not a great deal = | between Kalos, Henna and 1 1 Limosa in the final fight and f | though the number of Kalos | | was hoisted for second dividend, | 1 most onlookers thought Limosa § | (which was placed fourth) had § = gained those honors. § I Another stride and probably | | Limosa would have placed the § | matter beyond doubt, but as it § | was the judge's verdict had to | | be accepted, for he was in the = 1 only position to say. | | Nevertheless, Limosa's sup- 1 = porters were annoyed. | .^IIIIIUIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIMIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIHIIIIIIIIniIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIII MIXED up in his field Bennanee, with iVI his big stride, was ever in trouble at Woodville. MOTHING has raced more consistently this season than Wanderlust. He Avon again at Woodville.
THURNBELL UNLUCKY TT was a great bout between Henna •*■ and Ring Boy when they deadheated last week at Woodvllle, but had Thumbell got a decent run earlier he would have headed the pair. On that showing he seems bound to get there for the right money shortly. ABBEY DAY gave punters a good indicatlon of Taumarunui successes by galloping well in company with Gala Day prior to leaving Ellerslle. She appears to stay on i-easonably well. DETTING on the second-up system D at Taumarunui last Saturday was a, great success, for Billikins ran second and won next start, while both Abbey Day and Mervette won a double each. MINT LEAF,-was in trouble most of m the journey for the Taumarunui Cup, and was plainly bothered at the turns. He either wants small fields on country courses or a roomy track. A PRAD named Veronese which finished up fourth in the Novice at Woodville may be worth attention during the holidays.
HAS TO MISS COME surprise was expressed when ft was announced Tommy Green would not be on Agrion and Eulalie at Ellerslie. At Woodville last week it was said Green would not bo riding at Ellerslie —he is to stay and do Awapuni. Had Green gone north he would not have been able to ride Agrion in the _ _ Derby if In the "■ Green Shade were to have been a runner. Green is retained to do the Jamieson riding—when possible—and with In the Shade a starter that would be .his mount.
MADE HACKS OF THEM THE handy impost 'of 7.9 proved a luxury for Butterscotch in the mile and a distance Whariti Handicap at Woodville. She simply made hacks of the opposition when she struck the front and finished up returning a big price. But she was only a "one day" proposition, for with a rise of lllbs. next day she failed to get into the money. The Heather Mixture mare has speed to spare and must win again when she strikes a weak mob—and a track with the sting out of it. TT simply poured in for Supeob King the last bit of tote operations when he Avon at Woodville. THOUGH W. H. Jones stated he may be doing the Manawatu meeting at holiday 1 time, he may also be found at Ellerslie. UIGH FLOWN will not get better from now on, but is liable to win an easy hurdle race. THERE are few non-triers up north these days, but some of the riding witnessed is shocking. In fact, in some cases even recognized riders are getting their money under false pretences and should indulge in a rest until confidence returns.
HIS DOUBLE THE Auckland *■ light weight, "Larry" Wiggins, has two more than average mounts for the Auckland Cup and Railway double. In the Cup he will steer Papatu, and those who know the horse say he is not altogether without chance. ~ .... Silvermine is to H ' W| 99'ns carry Wiggins in the Railway. Last year Silvermine was fast, and he is better this season. Even with the crack three-year-olds "engaged, "Wig.'s" mount has to be thought of.
WHEN DAVID LOST HAVID GARRICK may easily have been returned the winner of the Woodville Handicap had his rider not experienced some trouble with his cap. The head gear seemed to interfere with his progress, when progress was most needed to capture the stake, and third only was his place at the close. Those who noticed the incident benefitted when David came home on the second day. The Comedy King gelding is on the improve just now, and it looks as if "Snow" Moroney will lead him in again shortly as a victor. UNLUCKY PARTAGA DARTAGA seems doomed to All second places. Went under twice at Woodville to Wanderlust and Superb King. There was big money for each of the pair named, but Partaga made the price acceptable on both occasions.
