MAIN ROADS
New Amateurs Should Avoid The number of new motorists using the roads is increasing every week. Having stated the obvious* "Truth" feels that m extending to all beginners a welcome to the happy band of fellow road -users, . a word of advioe concerning their week-end runs would not be amiss. HURING the fledgling stage of experiu ence all motorists might, with profit to themselves and for the general safety of all concerned, use the byway rather than the main roads. It is not at all easy, until experience has been gained, to keep a slow-moving car well to the left side of the road, and evidence goes to show that novices are far too prone to hang on to the middle of the road and thereby impede all other traffic to a degree that may easily become dangerous. One very slow-moving c\r occupying the crown of the road, and possibly not keeping m too. straight a line — for really it is easier to steer a car straight when travelling fairly briskly than when proceeding very slowly — holds back a large number of vehicles driven considerably faster, probably with far greater skill, and results m a temptation for everyone to adopt the most pernicious means of progress. The novice is not alone to blame. Those who supply the cars and. give the first instruction should impress upon beginners that until thoroughly proficient In the control of them they should stick to the quiet, secondary roads. Even if some definite place, rather than an aimless run, is the objective, a little inspection of a local map will almost invariably indicate a less crowded route than along one of the main trunk roads, most of which are already uncomfortably crowded during fine week-ends.
