NEW ZEALAND GOLD CUP

Some Classy Performers Will Face the Starter

(By "The Toff.")

The New Zealand Trotting Gold Cup, one of the most important events on the light harness calendar, will come up for decision at the Wellington Trotting Club 's meeting to be decided on Saturday.

NO fewer than 17 horses capable of reeling off two miles m 4.34 or better have been nominated, but of these seven have not had their engagements continued. Pan Van, Stunt Artist and Menember comprise the front-markers. Of the two, Menember has a bit of sparkling form to his credit, that was when he was beaten by a narrow margin by that good trotter Moneyspider at the spring fixture of the Wellington Trotting Club; • but Stunt Artist is a peculiar customer, so is Pan Tan. On 12 yards is the American pacer Silk Thread. He is regarded as an improved horse, but on his form at the Cup meeting at Addington none could fancy his chance. It is likely that William The Great will give the front markers a heap of trouble. He is a good horse when allowed to

trail and has recent form over two miles to recommend him. On 4.31 is Bonny Logan and she will be favored. At Forbury. Bonny Logan was seen out over two mile journeys — quite a new role for the speedy mare, and while she is far removed from being a natural pacer she may succeed over two miles off the mark she is on at Wellington. Harold Thorpe, Logan Park and Fight Ever are placed on 48 yards behind. Logan Park is engaged m the Auckland Trotting Cup, and if he has pretensions to such high honors, he should go better than the others at Petone. After weighing all the pros, and cons, of the candidates, Logan Park, Harold Thorpe and Bonny Logan should be nodding at the judge.
