STRAIGHT BITS AND SPURS
NICE MOUNTS
JACK BARRY, who brought home three winners at Feildingr, has several nice mounts at Ellerslle. He will be on (Ridgmount m the Foal Stakes and ißidgmount is reputed to be some good.
Two others he will be on are Agrion and Eulalie.
Agrion should strip much better at Ellerslie than he did at Riccarton. That will mean look out. All know the
pace Eulalle possesses and m the Royal Stakes she is going to give Childsplay something to do to head her off.
Three extra good rides Indeed! * # * THEIR CHANCE TAUMARUNUI has its chance this Saturday and Monday to even matters up financially. That is if the weather ia with them for the two-day gathering. # # # WORTH THE TRIP DERT ELLIS was riding both days at Feilding. He had to loavo early the second, and he did not liko going away and leaving what ho thought might be a winning ride. But to Tlmaru he had to go and tho winning- ride turned out to be a misa. Down south Ellis had a royal tlmo winning six races m two days. To date he hfcs ridden twenty-four winners this season. • # • TOMMY GREEN with twenty-ono and a-half successes Is second m the list of winning: jockeys. ♦ # * STILL THEY WIN THERE is no stopping the winning run of the stock of the Australian stallion, Acre. At Feilding tho first day (his representatives won three races, while another was third In his outing. Owner Jim Thorpe had a yard wide smile showing. # # # TIGHTWEIGHT Alf Driscoll intends to do his riding at Christmas at the Awapuni meeting. * * . • COURAGEOUS is well named. It was his tenacity that gained a second and a first for 'him at Feilding. On a bigger course he will shine again. •* ' * WHAT'S HE DONE? THE Woodville trainer, Jack Sullivan, must have killed a Chinaman, so bad has been his luck of recent weeks. At Feilding,. the hoodoo was still with him. Arrow Lad was distinctly unlucky the first day and with just an ounce of luck would have come home on the second. A change must soon be noted. * # * TRIPPED THEM THE first day at Feilding it was thought by his party that Ruanui needed a rate, but he showed he did not. On the second they went for evens, and evens they got. The three-year-old is going to be a bit of a nuisance to those of his age before many days are over. • # • • LOST NO TIME
MONEY ORDER Avas the first horse to come under the handicapper's eye, after the Railway weights were published. He won at Timaru last week and for the victory he (has been raised three pounds. I This brings his weight up to 7.13. , Bert Gillett has been a very patient man with Money Order and to win a big handicap with 'him would be quite m order. It is difficult to say just how Money Order will fare up north, but, one thing certain, he will jump away with the best of them. # • #
HE RETIRES OECRETARY Edmund Goodbehere has been associated with the Feilding Club fpr so many years that it is excusable to imagine him the whole works. Now he has retired "with his honors thick upon him." During the progress of the meeting last week he was made the recipient of a presentation from the club officials. #- * # THE Kinloch Stud is to come under the hammer late m January. The catalogue to be represented is a rich one and there will be plenty of bidders. ' « « # GLOW to begin cost Lady Limond her chance at Feilding. The mare will soon make amends and regain the moiiey lost on her last week. # * • QN a track like Feilding Ganymede is worth the proverbial two bob. He is an awkward brute at the best of times, but last week he had a duck looking silly. Barry must have enjoyed his ride. # • • THE accident Roy Reed met with at Takapuna prevented him from getting to Feilding-' At least one of his mounts — Vigilance — won. # * # LJINEKATORANGI— what a name to ** saddle a horse with! It means the lady of the clouds. Hine. should pick up a race over the holidays. # # # AFTER the patience he has had with *"* her it was lip to Ernie Watson to win a big handicap with Kilmiss. She scored nicely the second day at Feilding. # • • r\NE of the unlucky brigade at Feilding was Partaga. He got the worst of the start each day. And wasn't he going at the finish on the second day! # * * TT should he any day now for Royal A Damon. He has had the racing to fit him for the fray. # • • W7HIL/E schooling: Sir Fanciful prior " to Feilding Harry Burt had a nasty fall. He sustained very painful injuries to 'his tongue. # • * ESSENTIAL experienced a bad run *■* m his outing at Feilding. With a bit of luck next time he will be somewhere thereabouts.
TURNING TRAINER
I UCKY Indeed is i not to worry a and when he eats. Under the heading of the unlucky ones come George Young, who for the last two years hat: been fighting against ever - increasing weight. Now the stage haa been reached where Nature is starting to win every round. So Young has been forced to enter other fields. From Sydney comes the news that he is to take up training. His brothers, Wallace and Bill, art ln that lino at- present.
*■ *■ # AT TAUMARUNUI . FOR the opening- day at Taumarunui A on Saturday the following should be worthy of consideration: Trial: Young Pretender and Glenotto. Tarlngamotu: Abbey Day and Blllikins. Cup: Gala Day and Mint Leaf. Mat a puna: Billikins and Abbess. Hurdles: Lord Star and Matiere. Pukerimu: Abbey Day. Flying: Tea Time. Owhango: Star Comot. * # • RIGHT AWAY W7HANGAREI give it out that sum- I ** cient land has been purchased adjoining Kensington Park to allow thorn to make improvements at the homo bend. They intend to get on with the work almost immediately. Good! * *• # FAIR PERFORMANCE I/ING LU did his nine-furlong deed *■*■ like a good horse at Takapuna, though assisted toy Tinker's patient handling. He was favored with No. 2 and was always m a good position. That performance will bring him into some prominence if he meets the best during the Christmas week. #■ * * SAM'S RIDE CAM HENDERSON seemed only too pleased to answer a telegram m the affirmative when an inquiry came regarding the ride on Grand Knight for the Auckland Cup. Sam was home first on Tanadees last Boxing Day, so he knows the way round. # # # FOOTFALL LAME A FTER working on Saturday morning Footfall was very lame and at present it looks as if his engagements at Auckland will have to be cancelled. A few days will make known the nature of the trouble. • ♦ m LOOK OUT THE two-year-old Goblin Market is •*• doing splendidly for Trainer Mason, who lias designs on Ellerslie at Christmas. The racing Goblin Market had at Riccarton did him a power of good. He claims engagements at the Auckland summer function for which it is evident that he is set, because he is being worked the reverse way at Riccarton. * # s VERY UNLIKELY
TT is unlikely that Stuart Waddell will have anything racing at Ellerslie during the holiday season.
Such intimation ■has 'been received from a usually reliable quarter. Several of the WaddeTl team have been engaged at Awapuni and it is possible the racing will be done on that track. The veteran was at Feilding last iweek with Shirley, which contested •the Stakes.
le jockey who has tout what he eats
On her running m that event the mare would have to improve a deal to have a chance m the Railway.
# # * AND HE STOPPED DOYAL PICTURE is either no good or a very close relation to the Maori dog. In the Maiden the second day at Peilding he had a big break on the field when they turned for 'home, but he stopped to a walk. Ernie Keesing-'s face, when he returned to the birdcage, amply demonstrated his feelings about the grey. 1•• • v LJAD Courageous won the first flay at Feilding, instead of running second, he would have made Borsalene's Ashhurst dividend look very sick. There were only fourteen tickets on the Kemball horse. • # • A HORSE called Calithe has been carted about the country circuit the last few months. Just what for is not known. • # . • DOTH Reg. Mackie and Stewart Wilson hiked away from Peilding early to get to the Timaru meeting. A win each came to the pair. * # * THE Morris brothers all but cleaned up half the programme at Feilding. "Snow" won five" races, while Bert yyaa successful m two. With Jack Barry on three winners only six races were left for the rest. * * * TONE was flying at the finish of her race at Feilding. More will be heard of her. * ■ « * WEDDING MARCH won his first vv race since going back to Dick Hannon at Takapuna. It was a high weight, and he did the job so well to make it clear he will be a power to be reckoned with m holiday hurdle events. * # # DRAMPTON is a long time doing the v trick. In fact, J. Buchanan is experiencing a very lean time with his big team. • • • TT came ass.a bit of a surprise to note A both The Inlmigrant and Welcome Home withdrawn from the Vauxhall Handicap on the second day of Takapuna. There are evidently better things m store for Jamieson's pair of hacks.
An advertisement of interest to the thrifty appears elsewhere m this issue. The Government is issuing Post Office certificates for £1, £10 and £100 denominations, repayable m one, two or five years, obtainable at any Post Office Money Order office within the Dominion. The interest on the investment works out at 4% per cent., 5 per cent, and 5% per cent, on the purchase price according to the currency desired. The opportunitymay be regarded as an exceptional one to invest even small sums at good interest, and is an attractive proposition for young people and small investors as an incentive to thrift.
