JEWEL POINTER
Goes Faster Than Ever
(From 'N.Z. Truth's" Special Auckland Representative.) For a pacer to improve the best part of ten seconds for two miles m one turn of the calendar speaks volumes for his trainer.
YET that is what Jewel Pointer has actually credited J. Shaw with.
Still, it came as a surprise to note the consistent son of Logan Pointer go 4.23 3/5 when he took the Ferguson Handicap on the final day of Otahuhu. He started off the meeting on a 4.29 mark and took the Jellicoe m 4.29 2/5, for which he may have been expected to go back at least two seconds, the usual winner's penalty. However, he was let off with one second, and made a job of Cardinal Logan the second time. Everything was m favor of Jewel Pointer going his absolute best when he recorded 4.23 3/5, for the track conditions were perfect. Once George Phipps realized that the Jewel's stable mate (Amaris) was probably trying to slow the field down, he took Black Lila to the front and made the pace a cracker.
Phipps was certainly unfortunate m that his own mare went 4.28 4/5 for second money only, but Jie certainly can lay claim to making Jewel Pointer go so fast. They are both on bad marks as a result, and will find it hard to win unless they strike very weak fields. In Jewel Pointer's case, Shaw has dome idea of placing him m shorter races for the present.
