DOINGS IN MELBOURNE

New Zealand Horses Which Have Been Racing

(By Cable. — From "N.Z. Truth's" Special Melbourne Representative.)

Two or three New Zealanders figured at meetings m Victoria

during the last feyr days— either gloriously or ingloriously.

SINCE coming 1 over from New Zea- [' - land, Soldiers' Hope has proved a great disappointment, as he let his

supporters down badly on each of the two occasions they backed him. The first occasion was at Epsom on Saturday week, when m a poor field he, after having every chance, missed a place.

Not deterred by this, defeat the

stable again sent him out favorite for the second division of the Trial Welter at Sandown Park on Saturday last. This time lie ran' even worse, as never at. any stage did he flatter his supporters, and; Dempsey pulled him up at the straight .entrance. , . It was subsequently found that he had broken a fetlock joint and he was destroyed. After running second to Epilogue m the Bendigo Cup, Tea Bell was thought to have a great chance m the Sandown Park Handicap. After, being prominent to the distance he, however, dropped out of the picture and missed a place. This would suggest that a mile, or perhaps nine furlongs, is. just as far as he cares to go. Note Issue, a half-sister, by Paper Money, to The Wensuin, . opened her winning career on Friday last. It was only a Maiden Plate that she won, but she "won like a champion and fully justified the confidence that Yin. O'Neill, her trainer, \ had m her. Prior to. the rape Yin. said she would have to fall down to be'beaten. Ernie O'Neill, who. m his younger days waß a famous horseman m the Dominion, has taken- out a trainer's license and a, .trotting driver's lioense here. He works his horses at the ■Wiiliamstown course, and is hopeful Of getting a couple good enough to take back to New Zealand with him shortly.
