TWO IN FAST HALF-MILE
Aussie and Awarere In Preliminary
(From "N.Z. Truth's" Special Auckland Representative.) Two competitors ran half a-onile m 46 %sees. * n€ morning before Takapuna.
'THAT neither was capable of win--1 ning on opening day may make the ordinary Observer wonder whether the fast time was really registered. But "N.Z. Truth", can assure enthusiasts that 46 % was the showing on reliable watches, though it is just possible the distance was a shade under the half-mile.
| The trestles at Takapuna were i , probably m further than when the j measurement took place to make I half a-mile from the disc home/ Probably this f explains the speed shown by both Awarere and Aussie on Friday of , last week. But to give an idea that there was some merit In the gallop it may be mentioned that the previous morning Awarere. and Aussie registered 1.1 1/5 from the five-furlongr disc. ' The next best five before the meeting from that spot was recorded by Macroom (1.2 3/5), which dead -heated with. Ti Tree for the Takapuna Plate. In the gallops registered by George Paul's pair, Awarere had the best of the poundage each day. They' both ran respectable races m their initial public putingra at Takapuna. Aussie carried 9.11 into third place In the open sprint less than a length away from the right money, while Awarere made In the Shade travel all the way to beat him a half -head. It now seems certain that Awarere is better than most people imagined after his Whangarei defeats.
