FAIRWAY LURE

Summer Golf and The

Extra Hour

(From "N.Z. Truth's" Special Golf

Correspondent.)

In New Zealand, finalists of the olub championships usually play off the final heat In solitude.

TT was a compliment to the personality of the amateur champion, however, that when he and Reg. George set out to deoide whioh would be champion of the Tihirangi links, a large gallery of golfers followed the players m anticipation of witnessing a keen flght and fine golf. " Sloan Morpeth started aWay well and, not taking any risks against his" experienced opponent, went out In his first round playing brilliantly and soon had a substantial lead. Admittedly he caught his opponent a little "off," but this did not make the amateur champion play down to his opponent. Sloan seized every opportunity given to win a hole and played merciless golf until the match was practically over at the twenty-sixth. Sloan Morpeth now at his first attempt hns won the championship of the Tihirangi Club, and his presence at that club should cause some of the younger players to pract'se keenly and study hard, for they have something m front of them if they have hopes of winning the Cup back. If selected to play m the Kirk-Win-deyer Cup matches at Heretaunga, Wellington, golfers will see Morpeth at his best, for he is m great form. He should make the course easy by his hitting and work around the green is drawing near to perfection. He is sure to draw the gallery, SHORT DRIVES Te Kuiti golfers have just opened new links over the local racecourse which are opened for summer play. What must neai-ly constitute a record m winning club competitions this past winter season which has ended, has been achieved by J. Russell, of the Maungahickie Club, who won eighteen trophies. Can anybody beat this?

Shirley course is m beautiful condition at present and with the drier conditions the long holes become within "Birdeye" play to the crack players.
