A GOOD ONE FOR AUCKLAND

Jewel Pointer's Great Performance

(By "The Toff."

The Christchurch Handicap was an eye-lash affair, with Great Hope and Jewel Pointer fighting 1 out a stern finish.

pREAT HOPE was m front over the \J final circuit, with Jewel Pointer and Black Admiral doing their best to beat him. Once m line for home, Jack Shaw hit Jewel Pointer on the tail. His candidate responded, so he hit him again. He flew. And before Jimmy Bryce had a chance to holler to Great Hope, Jewel Pointer was first home. It was # wonderful finish. Great Bingen made a stirring effort to reach first money, but despite his meritorious performance third money was his portion. Jewel Pointer cut out the journey m 4.31 2/5, the first mile occupying 2.20 2/5 and the last 2.11. Great Bingen tramped the journey from starting-post to. winning-post m 4.21 4/5. He did his last mile m 2.9 and his last two furlongs m 32 sees. Peter Bingen and Talaro failed badly, while Black Admiral took the count a furlong down the running.. Jewel Pointer is owned by N. Moodabe, of Auckland.

THE Courtenay Handicap proved a triumph for Tom Thumb, which led from end to end. He is fulfilling all the good things predicted of him, and will go on to win m select company. He was driven a clever race by his trainer, P. Holmes — who is a master of pace — all through the first mile and a- half which occupied 3.25-4-5. Tom Thumb was followed by Golden Devon, Away; Trenand, Logan Park and Escapade. After that, Golden Devon and Trenand got the. stitch leaving Tom Thumb and Away to go on from Talent and Jack Potts. Wearing home, the issue became a duel between Tom Thumb and Away, but when Tom Thumb was called upon, he said good-day to Away and won by over two lengths. Talent filled third place. Jack Potts made a big effort to win but the task was just beyond the American, which registered a top-hole performance. Acron is weak, but Man o' War is afc game, as Ned Kelly. Logan Park missQd the jump out. This cost him fully fo.ur lengths and his position., But for that he would have participated m the money. Away is on a promise for a big stake.
