Satrap's Second In Derby

It is generally found that a three-year-old, which races prominently m the Derby has some say m the finish of the Fendalton Handicap. f\N Saturday the field for the mile and a-quarter event -has only one of the Derby horses engaged — that is Satrap. . / j At the time of writing it is not known if he will run or not, but if he does there will be a bit of money for him. * A nice cut of a horse, he is by Paladin out of a beautifully-bred English mare, Persian Lilac. •■ His N relatives to date have been of very ordinary class, but it would seem that at last ■ the mare has thrown a good one. • Satrap's second m the Derbywas a particularly fine effort and there is no doubting his courage. It was only sheer grit-, that made him head Laughing Prince off, and all know how game Laughing Prince is. He was ' beaten' on his merits last Monday. On what has been seen of him, Satrap will turn out to be a pretty fair stayer, and he may be the means of Steve Barrett winning a second New Zealand Cup. t> ' After doing that, Steve can then make him into a 'chaser, and win the National Steeplechase!

TN a district event at .Whangarei, A Exalted is noted among 1 the nominees. This is a three-year-old filly- by Leighton from Flora Macdonald, which was placed" m eight of her fourteen engagements as a two-year-old. She was usually smart into her stride last season, but failed the final bit of her races. If she has improved a little at staying on, Exalted should make matters merry for the County hacks.
