SUPPORTERS ARE OPTIMISTIC

Southern View of Rapier's Cup Prospects

(From "N.Z. Truth's" Special Christchurch Representative.) Rapier pleased his Cup supporters by winning 1 the principal event at the Banks Peninsula Racing- Club's meeting.

WHEN he took the lead a furlong from home he endeavored to ease up, but Emerson kept at him and he won well. Rapier is known for his. easy-up policy once he hits the front, so the fact of his rider having to keep kicking him till the post was past need not disturb his supporters for Saturday's big event. He is now generally regarded as the likely winner. His work and form certainly point to him annexing the rich prize. Footfall raced badly at Motukarara. He seemed sour and on that form he cannot win the Cup. It would not be surprising to find him missing from the field on Cup day. Count Cavour, which also participated m the race at Motukarara, had a rough passage and then finished fifth. Count Cavour's prospects on Satur-

; day are good. The fact of him being ! one of the real stayers m Saturday's [ event must persuade backers to count him m their final selection. i Star Stranger is a big fancy with southern racegoers and despite his big impost he is expected to be m j the limelight at the finish. Piuthair has been hanging m her work. Her trainer hopes to mend this defect, which is all that is needed to include her m the place-fillers. On his work on Saturday Battlement cannot have any chance, but those m the know say he is a moody customer. Beacon Light is doing tip-top. As the day approaches RAPIER, STAR STRANGER and BEACON LIGHT Are warming m the market.
