TROTTING CUP CANDIDATES

Talaro and Cardinal Logan Are Two With Chances

(By "The Toff.")

During the past week the Cup candidates have been particularly active. Some of them raced at Greymouth and Prince Pointer was at Oarnaru.

ON their West Coast showings, Acron and Peter Bingen should be turning for home when the race ia all over. Acron has turned Bour and won't try. Peter Bingen's work prior to the Greymouth function was of a convincing nature, but his failures last week have caused his supporters for the Cup to drop him like a hot potato. Logan Chief bears a well-trained appearance, but he rs under a cloud. Some days he goes about as if he had a headache. Horses with complaints cannot win the New Zealand Trotting Cup. From the country comes word of Audacious, whose track essays at Lauriston have been akin to that which goes to make winners of important races. His stable-mate, Queen's Own, is also doing well, but Audacious will be a source of danger to his opponents. Locanda Mac has got through a nice preparation, so has Escapade, whose work demonstrates that she is a better mare to-day than she has ever been. Now don't chuckle if she is first out and first home. Of Bryce's team, Kohara is the main chance and supporters of "Oakhampton Lodge" are confident that he will win. Little is said about Great Hope.

Cardinal Logan is a hot favorite. He made the fields at Greymouth look like novices at the game and the majority of trainers have sorted him out as the winner. In Talaro he will find a tough nut to crack. The Great Audubon gelding is a model of condition and the racing he had at Auckland has topped him off nicely. What beats Talaro will win. Do you get that? For place money, Black Admiral will be a contestant and if anything downs Talaro he may be the one to do it. He is better than he has ever been and at Addington he always goes good races. Sea Pearl has come through a solid preparation, but she has never raced up to her best form on left-handed courses. As for Imprint and Man O'War, they must have good horses' chances. Great Bingen is still carrying a lot of condition and his trainer will have a job to wind him right up for the Cup. The champion is improving with every work-out and provided the weather holds good he may come up a fit horse on Tuesday. But to get down to tin-tacks, Talaro, Cardinal Logan, Kohara and Black Admiral may fill the places.
