Manning Mixed It

TO switch over from the apothecary's mortar and pestle to the control of Hamilton's daily newspaper and for a period to take on as a side-line the onerous office of mayor of a rapidly growing borough' is to display highgrade versatility and adaptability. Arthur Edward Manning has done this and the -outward and visible measure of his success is that he is able to pull out plums from many a lucrative financial pie and to beat it o'nights to a right handsome demesne on the bonny banks of the beautiful Waikato river. . Manning commenced to juggle pills and pastilles m Hamilton at the psychological moment when that town decided to emerge from the chrysalis of vegetating villagedom and set about quadrupling her population m a decade. So it came to pass that the business of Manning grew and waxed exceeding great. Soon he was able to stand aside and watch a staff of trained assistants compound prescriptions for him. He then opened up a second drugstore and decided to have a tilt at haute finance. And what luscious plums there were for the very picking with the smiling, fruitful Waikato straining at the floodgates of unwonted prosperity. When Arthur took over the "Waikato Times" he discovered that there v was quite a lot about managing a modern newspaper that is not covered by the pharmacopoeia, but the resolute [application of his oft-tried-out business acumen proved to be the open sesame to success.
