IN connection with the theft of a large quantity of cigarettes, etc., from the warehouse of Irving Clark and Co., Ltd., Anzac Avenue, Auckland, three men — Francis Harry Rae (31) and Ernest Clifford Rae (43), two brothers, and Kenneth Edward James McQuoid 25), a son-in-law of the elder Rae, pleaded not guilty at the Auckland, Police Court last week, when charged with having cooperated m the theft. The value of the stolen goods, it was stated, totalled £78 4s. Statements made by the three accused, after their arrest were handed m by Detective-Sergeant Hammond, the two Raes alleging that McQuoid had asked them where he could sell some tobacco. McQuoid, who made two statements, the first denying any knowledge of the affair, admitted m his second statement that he had helped to carry the tobacco out of the house to the taxi. He completely disassociated himself from the theft and averred that his companions, who were then boarding at his house, had the tobacco stacked on their beds. Lawyer Allan Moody appeared for the two Raes and Lawyer Sel. Clark for McQuoid.. The accused were committed to the Supreme Court for trial.
